Republican Club denounces campus 'pornography'

Monday, February 18, 2008

The UMass Republican Club is making news again this week with their announcement today of a "Rally for Public Decency" at noon this Thursday.

The point of contention, according to Club President Brad DeFlumeri, is a poster on display in the window of the Radical Student Union office on the second floor of the Student Union.

The poster - which depicts two men engaging in sexual relations with one another - has drawn the ire of the UMass Republican Club and the Conservative Women's Caucus, according to a release from club officials.

DeFlumeri called the poster "an obnoxiously grotesque display of public indecency on taxpayer property."

Keep your eye on the Massachusetts Daily Collegian for more coverage throughout the week.

When the full article comes out in the Collegian, I hope it will bother to mention that the "poster" is actually a brochure about safer sex practices.

Anonymous,

To address your concerns, the full article will cover all sides of the controversy. Check back later this week and let us know how you felt about our coverage.
I personally don't take issue with the display, but when you paste a brochure, fully unfolded, on a window, it's for all intents and purposes a poster.

Like I said, the thing certainly doesn't offend me, but let's call a spade a spade.

You know I heard you can look at porn in the library as long as you don't distract others. You can't download music but you can look at porn because we are all over 18.

I've seen the posters and I'm sure that other places on campus have graphic posters and brochures too. UHS has the "how to put on a condom" thing with male genitalia on it. If they pass that stuff out I don't see how its any different than that poster...or the Not Ready for Bedtime Players who act that stuff out.

The Republican Club will huff and puff about - but the media should take this rally for what it is: an excuse for Mr. DeFlumeri to skip class.
